Act II. Sc. I: 7 Types of Narrative Conflict by Mark Nichol

1. Person vs. Fate/God: A person's internal struggle with larger external factors such as Fate

2. Person vs. Self A person’s struggle with his or her own prejudices or doubts or character flaws constitutes this type of conflict (Hamlet).

  3. Person vs. Person: Any story featuring a hero and a villain or villains (The Count of Monte Cristo) represents this type of conflict, though the villain(s) is/are often representative of another antagonist (the opp. for protagonist).

 4. Person vs. Society When the protagonist’s conflict is about confronting institutions, traditions, or laws of his or her culture, he or she struggles to overcome them, either triumphing over a corrupt society (I draw a blank here), rejecting it (Fahrenheit 451), or giving into to it (1984).

 5. Person vs. Nature In this conflict, the protagonist is pitted against nature (Robinson Crusoe) or a representation of it, often in the form of an animal (Moby Dick).

 6. Person vs. Supernatural: Conflict with the supernatural or a struggle with a constructed alter ego (Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde).

 7. Person vs. Technology: characters use technology to gain power or in which technology takes over or becomes an evil on society (Brave New World).

Homework: Choose one type of narrative conflict, and write your own narrative (personal story) that highlights how that conflict was created. Your narrative should be 100-200 words. Consider addressing the following:

 1) What things, events, or people brought on that conflict
2) How you may have resolved it
 3) A reflection of how you resolved it (was it the best method to resolve the conflict? Could you have done something else?)

  1. One conflict in a narrative that I can think if is in the book of Cell 49. It was about a boy name Joseph and his two friends Jacob and Mattie. They were all 16. Joseph was bullied everyday, got his lunch money stolen , and got beat up if he didn't run home. Mattie and Jacob have to stand and watch. They were threatened that if they help him, they're gonna get it worst. After school Mattie and Jacob go to his house to see if he's alright. His parents were always away on business meetings. So Mattie and Jacob were all he had. They did their homework and went to hangout in the woods. They stumble upon a weird metal object with an arua of lighting. Joseph went closer for a better look. The weird object started to suck him closer like a vacuum. Mattie and Jacob ran to him and started pulling him away. But the force was too strong. It's pulled him in and then Joseph was knocked out. Mattie and Jacob rushed him to the hospital. They pit him on bed and let hi rest. The doctors said it was fine and for them to go home. The next day Mattie and Jacob went to see Joseph. He was still sleeping. They stayed for 2 hours waiting for him to wake up. They begin to leave. The lights start to flicker and every alarm went off. Joseph woke up. But as he got up. The lights turned off. Jacob and Mattie turn looking for light. Thye see the same light as the object in the woods. But it wasn't the object. It was Joseph eyes. Then it spread to his whole body. It was like he was covered in lighting. He floats up out of his bed, shoot lighting without even moving. Mattie starts screaming and Joseph doctor walks in. He seems to be making Joseph stop. The doctor had the same power like Joseph. Joseph got up. He was normal for now. His doctor took the to his home and offered to teach Joseph how to control it. He accepts and begins his training. He sends Mattie and Jacob home. The next day, Mattie and Jacob see Joseph in school. Something was different. All of Joseph bullies weren't in school. A few hours later a gym teacher finds there bodies with a clean hole in their chest. Mattie ask Joseph what he do. He looked at her and said I got them back. Mattie starts yelling at him on how it was wrong. Then she slapped him. His lighting arua brusted out and he began to float. Then there was a flash. Everything was destroyed. Mattie was electrocuted. Jacob ran in the room. We screamed what did u do. He ran to Joseph doctor and told him what happened. They suggested that they lock Joseph up until he can control it. The Doctor agrees and went to find Joseph. The Doctor tells home the plan and Joseph disagrees. The Doctor tells him he will use force. Joseph shows is arua as a sign to fight. The Doctor warns him that he has 100years experience. He's immortal. Joseph strikes his doctor. It doesn't phase him. The said I warned u and strikes back. He knocked Joseph out. He carries him to a cell where he had to go as a teeny to learn to control his power. It was Cell 49. Everyday the doctor goes down there to help Joseph learn control.

  2. One conflict that i can think of is The American Revolutionary war.Conflicts between colonists and Britain on western frontier because of western expansion and regulation of colonial trade, and increased taxation of colonies. At dawn on April 19, about 70 armed Massachusetts militiamen stand face to face on Lexington Green with the British guard. An unordered 'shot heard around the world' begins the American Revolution. The british charged with bayonets and murdered eight Americans and ten wounded. The british also destroyed the colonists weapons and supplies. At the North Bridge in Concord, a British platoon is attacked by militiamen, with 14 casualties.British forces then begin a long retreat from Lexington back to Boston and are harassed and shot at all along the way by farmers and rebels and suffer over 250 casualties. News of the events spread through the Colonies. The Americans began the war with significant disadvantages compared to the British. They had no national government, no national army or navy, no financial system. However, the Americans had multiple advantages that in the long run outweighed the initial disadvantages they faced.Britain entered the war with confidence; it had the world's most powerful navy. However they had no major allies, and only had troops provided by small German states to bolster the small British Army.

  3. A time when I experienced a an external conflict was when I was failing my classes in school. The reason for the conflict was because I wasn't really doing my homework very well. When ever I was to get home I wouldn't really have the time to do the work because I would be so tired. The way I resolved this conflict was that I starred doing my homework and all the other things I needed to do before I went to sleep

  4. One time I had a conflict was going near my cousin's dog. I was really scared because he would always look at me mean. One day I had to go to my cousin's house for a cookout/party. I arrived early to help set up and his dog started looking at me. I got scared and ran in his house. So, when I saw my cousin I told him I was scared of his dog. He told me it was going to be cool, but I was still scared. Then, we came outside because there was a lot of people in the backyard. We had the cookout and then we had to clean up. My cousin Junior came outside and took the dog of his leash. Before I could think his dog charged me and he bit my leg. I ran for the door and showed my mom. She put alcohol on it I told her I didn't like the dog. I will be honest to this day I don't like dogs anymore.
